Col Richard Fenn Barquist, longtime commander at Fort Detrick and head of the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, died Wednesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital. A Des Moines native born May 19, 1923, he served 35 more years after rejoining as a physician, with assignments across Japan, Greenland, Iran, India and Vietnam. He retired June 30, 1985, as a colonel. he was married to Rose F. Scott Barquist since July 1, 1942.
