Welfare Scandal Claims Threat to Economic Strength
A conservative critique links rising welfare costs to political manipulation. The piece cites Maryland up 50 percent and Massachusetts abuses uncovered by a state House Welfare Committee probe in Springfield. Examples include a recipient using 10 names to collect $18,000, airline tickets for fake returns to Puerto Rico, moving expense checks, bedspreads and sheets funding, and a student exploiting vouchers for two months in Europe. The author accuses liberal politicians of diluting accountability and wasting taxpayer money.

Pasture and range lost 3 million acres, urban expansion up 11 million, and 9.5 million more acres added to forests. Yet three fifths of cropland and large shares of pasture and forestland lack proper conservation.
