No Tip-Off To Nazis On Raid
London reports Army Air Forces officers dispute a neutral claim that a tip-off to Germany caused the loss of 60 Flying Fortresses in the Schweinfurt raid on October 24. They cite Nazi fighter strength, ground smoke screens, timing, and radio direction limits as not supporting advance warning. Fliers say heavy losses stemmed from long indirect routes over enemy territory and lack of concurrent raids to mislead the Luftwaffe.
