Roosevelt seeks year long college study after service
President Roosevelt asked Congress to provide one year of study in college or other educational institutions after the war for every qualified man and woman who serves six months in the armed forces. A government funded plan would cover tuition and living costs for full time students, with wartime graduates eligible for up to three years under a special group. The proposal estimates 1 million users, costs about 1 billion dollars, and emphasizes state control with federal backing and a permanent agency to coordinate post war education.
