Tracking grouse study uses transmitter bands and funnel traps
Im Gilford describes a four year project in Garrett County Maryland using radio transmitters on released grouse, funnel traps, and roadside drumming counts to measure abundance, nesting, and survival. A $25 reward backs band returns, and mortality switches on transmitters flag deaths for cause analysis. The study, funded by the Ruffed Grouse Society with $10,000, pools Maryland data with four other states to assess hunting’s impact and population dynamics in a southern Appalachian habitat.
