County farmers push right-to-farm protection plan

Frederick County farmers form a task force to draft a right-to-farm ordinance. Leaders emphasize protecting farms from nuisance complaints and clarifying farm definitions. The panel will include Farm Bureau, Pomona Grange, agribusiness, extension, Farm Credit, soil district, and preservation reps and will hold a public hearing on a yet unscheduled date.

Frederick County 250th anniversary committee named

Seventeen people were chosen Monday to organize Frederick County 250th anniversary events in 1998. Paul Gordon urged commissioners to appoint a steering committee to plan countywide events with subcommittees as needed. Thornburgh backs hard policing over crime prevention

Hobbs and Loverock Win Thurmont Town Commission Seats

Incumbent Edward G. Hobbs and newcomer Bruce C. Loverock led Thurmont's town election with 388 and 372 votes respectively as 29 percent turnout produced one of the highest totals in years. Both will serve four year terms starting November 1, amid calls to balance growth with business attraction and youth recreation focus.

Mural project in red as bridge fundraiser nears deadline

With three weeks to dedication on November 11 the South Carroll Street bridge mural runs $40,000 short of its $173,000 budget. Shared Vision backs a major donor option to etch a name on the bridge and thanks the benefactor publicly. Contributions remain tax deductible and residents may sponsor a stone in the mural for 25 or 100.
