Navy Paint Factories Face Less Use Now
The 1952 Tax Foundation data show the Navy produced 150 kinds of paint worth 14 dollars. fiscal 1954 output drops to six million dollars with only 28 varieties. The House panel argues the Navy should limit production to anti fouling paints, amid many civilian firms supplying bottom paints. The system traces back to 1902 with Norfolk Yard creating a paint shop, expanding by 1935 to serve Atlantic Coast yards. Mare Island remains another facility.
