A sixth grade pupil, William Richard Bloyer of Route 1 Jefferson, was shot in the left shoulder while burning paper trash on school grounds at Burkittsville elementary. He was rushed to Frederick Memorial Hospital, treated, and released. The incident occurred as another pupil, Thomas Kidwell, and Bloyer heard a gun shot from a nearby corn field and reported it to Deputy Sheriff George F. Crause and State Police who opened an investigation.
