California ballot plan would criminalize horse meat sales
In Roseville area, supporters of a ballot initiative seek to bar selling or exporting horses for slaughter for human consumption, a move backed by animal advocates and actor Robert Redford. The measure could carry up to three years in prison for violators, with California home to about 750,000 horses. Proponents cite foreign demand and meat prices, while opponents argue slaughterhouses meet federal rules and some horses have no other use.
