Frederick County reports $9 million surplus for FY 2000

Frederick County Comptroller Doug Browning announced a $9 million surplus from the FY 1998 budget now available for the FY 2000 budget. Income tax revenue rose about $1.2 million above earlier estimates, with gains in recordation taxes and highway user taxes also contributing. A bond rating agency reaffirmed the county’s bond rating, and departments returned $1 million in unused funds. Commissioners foresee a $4 million cut to build the new budget, not the $6 million previously predicted.

Tesoro Markets close after 21 months in operation

Two grocery outlets backed by city funds closed due to insufficient business after 21 months. Tesoro Food Market at 33 N Market St and Prospect Plaza Shopping Center shut Thursday. The city agreed to buy the site and finance the sale to Tesoro as part of a five year operation clause.
