Massive Tax Increase Awaits Congressional Action
A 5.75 billion dollar tax increase, boosting individual and excise taxes with retroactive corporate hikes, was approved by a Senate House conference committee. The plan raises most individuals’ rates about 11.25 percent, adds 2.31 billion to corporate taxes, and mixes various excise rises with some revenue losses. Instant effects begin November 1 for individuals and excise, with corporate changes retroactive to last April. Major items include whiskey and liquor tax hikes, beer and wine rate increases, cigarette, gasoline, and auto taxes, and a general shift in manufacturing levies. The package aims to lift total wartime tax totals to 15.75 billion since Korea began.

Truman Questions Finnegan Resignation Quote
President Truman said he cannot recall asking James P. Finnegan to stay on as St. Louis collector of Internal Revenue. He criticized Finnegan’s outside work while on the payroll and questioned whether such activity or nonpolitical appointments should be prohibited by law. He avoided confirmation on Finnegan’s claim that he was urged to quit a year ago and stated his displeasure with political fundraising linked to a future library in Grandview, Missouri. He denied diary claims about Eisenhower and Bradley succession thoughts.
