London October 8 Sir Richard Paget a 78 year old British lawyer and physicist has developed a hand gesture system for children deaf from birth He demonstrated 150 of 3000 signs to the anthropology section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science He plans to educate young deaf children aged 1 1/2 to 2 years using this sign language and teach them to speak using signs as the equivalent of words He says a normal five year old has a 2000 word vocabulary while a deaf child may only have about 50 words The goal is a language as easy to acquire for the deaf as spoken language is for hearing children
