First Women Serve On Frederick Jury In Larceny Case
In Circuit Court this morning William F. Thompson was sentenced to 18 months in the Maryland Reformatory for Males after pleading guilty to statutory rape. A 25 year old Frederick restaurant worker from Monrovia pled guilty to statutory rape of a 12 year old near Monrovia in Baker Park July 20. A jury of ten men and two women found Joseph T. Carey of Brunswick guilty of grand larceny of a watch. Mrs Marguerite G. Staley and Mrs Ferne S. Etzler became the first women to serve on a Frederick county petit jury. Davis and other jurors listed, with Thompson agreeing to testify for the State in Daugherty’s trial. The court recessed for 1 p m to resume with Daugherty’s trial. Carey's case involved a watch theft during a drinking party near the old canal and Potomac River, with multiple witnesses and other party members linked to the handle of the watch.
