EPA moves to tighten controls on big trucks and SUVs
The EPA unveiled a two phase plan to reduce pollution from heavy duty trucks and super large sport utility vehicles. The rule would require new pollution controls on tractor trailers and similar trucks and require refiners to cut sulfur in diesel fuel by up to 90 percent. Beginning in 2007, the plan also tightens limits on 8,500 pound plus SUVs to close a loophole from earlier tailpipe controls, as automakers push larger models like the Ford Excursion and Chevrolet Suburban.
