Frederick records an overnight low of 38 degrees the coldest since May 4 and Unionville sees 35 and 34 degrees. Forecaster calls for a 37 degree low tonight with sunny highs in the upper 60s. October expected wet and cool after September's 10.83 inches of rain.
The 1966 Great Frederick Fair closed amid rain and dreary attendance estimates between 22 000 and 25 000, down from last year’s 51 500. Officials blamed weather for low turnout and revenue dips while conceding some concessions and exhibits performed well. Jack Kochman’s Hell drivers were canceled due to rain, dimming hopes for a peak Saturday crowd.
Col Vincent L. Ruwet commander at Fort Detrick since 1964 retired after over 27 years of service. A new commander to take over this week. He will join Microbiological Associates in Bethesda and live in Frederick while commuting. He served in WWII theaters earning the Bronze Star and CIB and holds advanced military education degrees. An informal Friday gathering honored him with a plaque and flag.
A Frederick man Maurice E. Boyd received a seven month jail term for a second escape while already serving concurrent sentences for assault and escape. Testimony showed he left the County Roads Shop on April 18. he was captured the next day after police were notified he was in his apartment. The new sentence runs retroactive to August 1, the expiration date of the earlier sentences.

Sandra Cwikielnik, 24, gave birth to seven babies four months premature after fertility hormone treatment. Four girls and three boys survived only briefly. one died at birth and the rest died soon after. Dr. Noran Turksey treated her at New England Medical Center Hospital. The drug's aim is to find safe dose levels to prevent overstimulation and multiple births. The seven infants were reported healthy for five months but succumbed to immaturity.
Frederick City Police report four or more burglars used an acetylene torch to cut a triangular hole in the rear safe at People's Drug Store Prospect Shopping Center. They entered via roof air vent, moved a Mosler safe to center, and removed about $3,500 Saturday night. Water poured into the safe area as the suspects fled.
