Rainy finale dampens Fair attendance after record Friday
Warm Friday brought a record 9,489 paid attendees plus thousands of schoolchildren. By nightfall rain reduced crowds today. Week total reached 14,395, far below last year. A Saturday crowd of 28,500 set a weekly high of 51,500 paid admissions. Rainfall brings September total to 10.80 inches. Friday saw 4H Tractor Driving winner Richard Easterday and a record 4H Baby Beef Sale total of 24,940.65 with top Angus steer at 1.81 per pound. State Police called off a three-part search for an airplane reported to have crashed on Detrick Road near New Market. A Detrick Road resident reported seeing a P-51 Mustang fly by and the pilot bail out, but FAA and Martinsburg Airport checks found no flight information.
