The White House said joint U N U S military activity may be needed to protect food and relief shipments from feuding Somali warlords. Marlin Fitzwater said the plan involves U N U S control under a larger force, with Clinton’s staff already briefed and supportive.
Rebels backed by aircraft attacked the presidential palace and seized at least one key airport as six people were killed. President Carlos Andres Perez said the revolt was quelled though fighting raged in the city and at the airport. Military officers tied to a February bid and guerrilla factions were cited as involved.
A 30 year-old Frederick County woman remained hospitalized Friday after a five-vehicle crash at 10 10 p m Wednesday on U S 15 at Jefferson Street in Maryland. Robin Lynn McCreodan of Fish Hatchery Road was in critical but stable condition at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Police said a blue van struck Mark Anthony Beluzco, 20, of Olney, causing his southbound vehicle to cross the median and collide with a northbound vehicle before continuing. The van driver fled the scene.
Weather should be cool with mid 40s temps and good skies opening day. Local expert Jim Gilford notes growing deer numbers and predicts heavy harvest if conditions stay favorable, with 60 percent of the season’s kill expected Saturday.
Beacon House and Walkersville Diners hosted festive Thanksgiving meals with 24 donated turkeys by Wednesday, 333 meals served by volunteers countywide. Terry Lenny coordinated at Beacon House, noting 16 turkeys cooked and leftovers saved for Christmas. Diners from Frederick enjoyed traditional fare amid pinecone centerpieces. Roberta Rose volunteered, planning a Christmas return. At Walkersville firehouse, 30 turkeys were roasted and 74 gallons of oysters fried for the annual dinner.
Lehigh Port land Cement Co. blames two sulfur gases in a November 5 waste oil shipment from Mobil Oil's Paulsboro plant for causing dizziness in six workers at Lehigh. An open hatch allowed gases to concentrate. hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans prompted hospital tests and quick recoveries. The Paulsboro supplier will be permanently suspended.
