Man Admits Setting Fire to Historic Loy's Station Bridge
A Hagerstown man, Paul McCafferty, 27, pleaded guilty to arson as a public structure and conspiracy for the June 27 blaze that destroyed the Loy's Station covered bridge on Old Frederick Road. Circuit Court Judge G Edward Dwyer Jr set sentencing for January 13, released him on personal recognizance, and ordered weekly reporting to Parole and Probation. The plea calls for a possible 10 year term on each count to be served concurrently, with potential 40 year exposure if terms are breached. McCafferty is to aid the state in its case against Joseph Perla, who owned the truck involved in the arson and remains at large.
