Gunman holds off police at Maryland supermarket

In Hagerstown LeRoy Sartitse, armed with a shotgun, barricaded the Grand Union for four hours after being fired from the market. He was taken to the Finan Center in Cumberland for psychiatric observation. no charges have been filed. District manager Roger Earhart sheltered in a second floor room as authorities responded.

Cotton supplies up demand down charted by USDA

The Agriculture Department says U S cotton prospects are strained by ample supply and weak demand with no quick fix. The 1962 harvest is about a quarter under last year but the 11.9 million bale crop tops earlier forecasts due to weather ravages in Texas and Southwest. Farmers abandoned over two million acres yet remaining land yields set records. Total inventory, including prior harvests, is the largest in 15 years, while demand remains weak and use prospects fall to a 1975 low.
