Escapes Jail Term in North Carolina Assault Case
Mack Ingram, a 45 year old tenant farmer and father of nine, avoids a six month jail term after being suspended for six months for assault on a female. His lawyers with the NAACP will appeal to the State Supreme Court, arguing the verdict by a white male Superior Court jury was incorrect. The case centers on Ingram allegedly eyeing 19 year old Willie Jean Boswell Webster and chasing her across a cornfield on her father's farm in June 1951. The prosecution contended the act qualified as assault under state law. The defense presented no testimony.
