Jellyfish Set for Space Mission on Shuttle Columbia
Thousands of jellyfish are ready for a weightless space mission aboard Columbia. Dr. Dorothy Spangenberg of Hastern Virginia Medical School plans to send 2700 juvenile jellyfish to study metamorphosis in microgravity, with more than 25,000 expected by spring and a target launch in May. The project, part of a Spacelab life sciences mission that includes a rat study and 18 other experiments, aims to help understand growth, balance, and calcium loss in space.
