Food Hikes No Benefit To Farmers
Washington AP reports that groceries may cost more by mid next year while farmers receive less. The Agriculture Department says retail costs of market basket foods may stay above current levels through mid 1971 due to rising wages and transportation charges. The farmer's share of the food dollar is seen at 38 cents in the first half of next year, down from the prior quarter, with middlemen profits not rising. Labor and transport costs drive price increases as wages average 3.01 dollars per hour in distribution and transport sectors, up 6.4 percent from a year earlier.
