Burglars broke into the South Bend post office and stole 18 652 dollars in stamps on November 1. The theft left post office inspectors and police with few leads to pursue the thieves.
Maurice Vans killed self after attempting to kill Francis J. Heney in San Francisco County Jail. A derringer was found on Vans with a spur of shoes concealing it. Vans shot Heney through the forehead then died in his cell after guards found him. He had worn special shoes and claimed sleep with them on.
H W Smith of Richmond Va, twenty eight years old, was found dead in the old state rock quarry near Ratleigh in suspicious circumstances. Police believe robbery and murder. Smith reportedly carried a large sum of money. Neck cut, body and clothing wet, hat coat and overcoat across a water pool, cake dollar found in his pockets.
Pekin reports the death of Tsie Hai Ang the dowager empress and the emperor after years of regency and rule. The court enters mourning for three years and preparations for potential succession were made as foreign regents note changes. Anxious crowds observe palace rites while the city moves to blue as red objects are removed.
