A collector in Wilho g was sentenced to one year in the Allegheny workhouse after authorities alleged he gathered $3000 for John Dalzell’s campaign in Dalzell’s district without authorization. The case, based on a sheet of pledges, claimed funds were diverted to the collector’s use.
Washington announces the appointment of Colonel George H. Torney as surgeon general of the Army to succeed Surgeon General R. O'Reilly. Torney, currently in charge of the general depot at San Marino, will assume the post January 1.
In Trenton New Jersey on November 14 a committee led by State Treasurer Voorhees proposed a memorial fund for the late president. A $10,000 endowment will support a plastic monument with a subcommittee in each area. The monument is to be placed at Princeton, the late president’s home and burial site, with incorporation papers to be filed soon to accelerate the project.
In Meadville Pennsylvania on November 14 Eugene Nall stabbed and killed James Sheldon aged fifty two after a dispute over Corrie Nock, adopted daughter of Mrs. Mertie Rock Hall. Hall then wounded Sheldon’s ally in a subsequent home dispute as the couple sought to take custody. Hall is imprisoned.
About twenty five molders at the Mitchell Van Meter company in Linfield Pottstown Pa refused to work after the firm posted a notice that wages would rise and output would double. The company discharged all striking molders and they were paid off at the office.
Lincoln Nebraska November 14 Mr and Mrs William J Bryan plan a Sunday departure for a trip to Mexico They will seek rest and recreation The itinerary is not announced Bryan will deliver a commencement address in Philadelphia on December 23
Harrisburg Pa Nov 14 The state livestock sanitary board ordered a quarantine of all cattle in Montour Northumberland Antos and Columbia counties due to a foot and mouth outbreak. All infested cattle will be killed with compensation from federal and state governments.
President announces resignation of Secretary of the Navy Victor H. Metcalf due to ill health. Truman H. Newberry named to succeed, with Metcalf stepping down December 1 after long service in naval affairs and prior cabinet work. Metcalf previously led naval matters in Congress and will end a troubled tenure marked by a nervous breakdown.
Norton Virginia reports a boiler explosion off the railroad injuring two more and killing two others. Names like John Hubbarg and Nickolass appear among the injured and dead, with details of injuries such as scalds and severed backs.
