New York May 17 The United States government files suits against American Sugar Refining Company to recover 93 424 against shipments of sugar to Hover Rider refineries in Shnooktsn during the war years. Complainants allege violation of the customs act alleging scale fraud to conceal true weights at Brooklyn refinery.
Governor Sturrt will urge a $6,000,000 state highway project to connect Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as a leading agenda item for the January legislative session. He also plans to push ballot reform changes to simplify voting while preserving reform laws from 1906 and will veto any measures altering primaries or personal registration.
In Pottsville Abraham Oakum a clothing merchant was blinded when his wife threw carbolic acid during a family quarrel then drank the remaining liquid and likely will die. Neighbors heard the disturbance and found Mrs Oakum convulsing on the floor as authorities arrived.
The treasury bought 100,900 ounces of silver for delivery in New York at 60 601 per ounce. William Jennings Bryan was unanimously chosen by the seniors of Westminster College in New Castle Pennsylvania to deliver the commencement address next June. In Kentucky a woman and two children were found murdered in Frankford with throats cut. In Pennsylvania a shooting in East Millsboro left one dead and three injured in a dispute over a well between boarding houses.
Peter Van Vilesingen, a real estate dealer, confessed to forging mortgage notes and deeds to defraud about twenty five victims of more than 700000 dollars. He claimed use of a hidden device to trace signatures and was sentenced to a penitentiary term, with a detailed timeline of his arrest and court proceedings. He wed Jessie Roosevelt in 1907 and was noted for charitable interests toward boys.
In Wilmington Delaware on November 17 a dog leaped to shield twelve year old James Verderame from a frightened horse. The animal aimed at the boy’s head and the dog’s timely intervention kept the child safe as the horse reared and bolted. Verderame is the son of Salvi Verderame of Lincoln Street.
