New Design over 70 will not open til spring

Lova Rakowski state highway official says portions of the New Design Road project around Frederick will open in stages. The 1 70 bridge over 1 70 east to Guilford Drive should open next spring while the 1 276 bridge to Guilford Drive is due by Thanksgiving. Weather permitting exits from 1 70 north to 1 70 east may open by end of November, with 1 70 west to 1 270 south slated for mid to late December. The project begun in 1997 totals 206 million dollars and includes new interchanges to ease Md. 36 access.
