Change In Government Few Employes Affected
Margaret Hindman reports that a county government shift likely affects only a few employees despite a new board. Most hires come from the commissioners or election results, with merit protections for clerical and some office staff. The sheriff plans to recruit a new staff and Montevue oversight may move with the new board taking office December 1. The recent Republican sweep ends 12 years without a GOP majority on the commissioners and four years for a Republican sheriff in Frederick County.

Two Teens Rescued From River After Canoe Capsize
Two youths from Hagerstown and Boonsboro were rescued from a Potomac River island after their canoe capsized near Harpers Ferry on a Friday afternoon. Rod Kephart of Hagerstown and George Dahl of Boonsboro held to their craft, drifted downstream, and reached an island south of Knoxville. Local residents alerted authorities, and Brunswick volunteers Harry Barnhouse and Donald Minnick traveled to the island from Brunswick, crossing upstream to the island when the river was too swift at Knoxville. The youths were brought to the Maryland side and hospitalization was deemed unnecessary.
