Brush Fire Roars Through Southern California
A football shaped brush fire 20 miles across burned west of San Bernardino forcing about 2,000 people to flee from four towns and an Indian Reservation. Oil Spill Contained Near Wagners Point Harbor
A coast guard spokesman said a spill in Baltimore harbor near Wagners Point was contained early today after about 900 gallons of crude spilled from the Liberian tanker Michael L. The tanker was docked at the American Oil Co terminal and a 1,000 foot floating boom was deployed to confine the slick.

Police foil plot to kidnap officials and hijack plane
Minneapolis authorities say a plan to kidnap Gov Harold LeVander and St Paul Council member Rosalie Butler and hijack an airliner to free Angela Davis and Bobby Seale was foiled. Ronald Reed, 20, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to steal an aircraft along with aggravated assault and armed robbery. Notes found on Reed described the plan and threatened to blow up the plane if demands were not met. The warning referenced ransom prisoners including Miss Davis and Seale.

An explosion on a Gulf of Mexico oil platform off Grand Isle injured fourteen workers, three critically, with burns over 90 percent.
