State Parachutist Walks After 900-Foot Fall At Bridge Day
In 1999 Brian Tome traveled to Fayet teville West Virginia for the Bridge Day Festival where skydivers base jump from the New River Gorge Bridge. Tome, a 27 year old officer from North East with about 100 jumps, survived a parachute failure and shattered both legs landing on railroad tracks near the river. He spent over a month in intensive care and faced many surgeries and braces over two years. His doctors warned of possible amputation but Tome chose rehabilitation and faith guiding his recovery with support from partner Sheila and physical therapist Tracey Doherty.

Maryland Colleges See Record Enrollment Rise
Maryland higher education institutions enroll a record 286477 students this year, up 5.3 percent and the largest one year gain since 1974. Crowded classes and dorm-room shortages follow across community colleges and four year campuses, spurring a mix of optimism and logistical challenges. Increased state funding under Gov Glendening helped drive the surge, with campus construction projects approved this year totaling 41.3 billion.
