Wal-Mart plans approved in Mount Airy amid growth worries
Mount Airy planning commission granted conditional approval for a Wal Mart site plan after a seven month debate over growth. The vote 6-0 required road upgrades and zoning variances, with no direct access to South Main Street and a new 4 foot perimeter fence. Additional stores totaling 23,400 square feet connect the existing Safeway and the vacant rear lot. Local opposition formed Us Against The War, later Citizens For A Better Mount Airy, citing traffic noise and loss of town character.
