Frederick County drops transfer tax request this year

The Frederick County Commissioners voted to remove the transfer tax from their legislative list for the year after failing to gain support. They will refile a bid for community development authority across the county, seeking broader special taxing district power beyond Lake Singapore and Urbana. Frederick County Revenues Rise By Seven Million In Q1

Frederick County reports 7 million jump in revenue in the first quarter versus last year, with total receipts at 113.6 million led by property taxes at 103.4 million. New commercial and industrial construction plus warehouse upgrades lift income tax and other revenues, while expenditures rise by 3 million.

Mt Airy Fire Co to start ambulance billing in 1999

Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Co will begin billing for ambulance transport on January 1, 1999. Captain Jim Crum says the move funds continued emergency medical services and followed a year of research and the Carroll County commissioners recommendation. Only one nearby service currently bills.

Braddock water system gets $750000 state grant

The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a 750000 grant to replace the deteriorating Braddock water system. Construction began last September with completion targeted for May 2000. The project includes a new source, treatment plant, distribution system, and storage tank.

Frederick County voters chose two new delegates for District 3, Joe Bartlett and Alex Mooney, both 26 and 27, sharing a conservative, supply side and tough criminal-justice bent. Maryland dairy group reviews compact and nutrient rules

The Maryland Dairy Industry Association held its second annual meeting in Hagerstown to discuss the Northeast Regional Dairy Compact and new nutrient management regulations. MdIA President Myron Wilhide urged cooperation with milk cooperatives, Farm Bureau, Grange, and lawmakers to join the compact and adopt workable nutrient plans. He noted that Maryland must persuade New York and Delaware to join, while Pennsylvania weighs its milk marketing board. Details on nutrient regulations were previewed by Harold Smith, who warned farms applying fertilizer or manure face required plans or penalties.

Retired farmer Walter Page dies after fall at home

Walter G. Page 81, a well known retired farmer, died at Suburban Hospital from injuries from a fall at his Washington Street home. He reportedly fell from a ladder while using a blower on the carport roof, struck a vehicle, then hit the ground. Two young girls nearby alerted relatives. Page was flown by state police helicopter to the hospital.
