Community Living marks decade since opening home for the mentally disabled
Community Living celebrated ten years of serving residents with mental retardation at an October dinner dance at Quality Inn. Local politicians joined staff and residents as 59 residents received certificates of accomplishment for 1989, highlighting deinstitutionalization toward home environments and increased independent living.

Police study tests for photo radar speed enforcement
Maryland State Police will run a 14 to 18 month study funded by a federal grant to test four types of automatic photographic radar. The project will evaluate stationary and moving police car setups to mail motorists notices of violations. Some lawmakers oppose the plan citing constitutional concerns about facing the accuser.

Jury rules against injured Gore workers in Maryland case
A Cecil County Circuit Court jury ruled against 25 workers from Maryland and Delaware who claimed exposure to toluene diisocyanate caused a crippling lung disease at WL Gore & Associates plants. The plaintiffs alleged McKay Corp WR Grace Co and E I du Pont failed to provide safety information. The nine week trial ended after four hours of deliberation. Some workers sobbed as they left, and attorney Wendy Fleischman vowed an appeal to the Maryland Court of Special Appeals.
