Accused Prowler Shot By Pinewood Drive Man
A Pinewood Drive resident shot and wounded an alleged prowler early this morning. Thomas T. Rawlings, 1306 Pinewood Drive, fired one shot wounding Calvin Lee Lockard, 38, of Yeagerstown Road Mt Airy. Rawlings said he warned the prowler and fired as he fled. Lockard admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital with pellets in arm and side. Rawlings faces assault and discharge of a firearm charges with bonds set for a June 9 hearing. A second incident nearby saw William Flynt, 21, wounded when a pistol discharged while he cleaned it. Police continue investigation.

Eight more bodies have been dug up near Yuba City along the Feather River, raising the total to twenty. Juan Corona, 37, of Yuba City, is jailed on ten murders amid a case with no motive yet established. Workers turn up bodies in crude graves as investigators probe suspected sites in a mile-square area north of town. Corona had prior state hospital treatment and ran a farm labor contracting service there. His wife defends him, saying he could not have killed anyone.

W Germany train wreck kills 45 in Wuppertal area
A head on collision between a freight train and a two coach passenger train near Oberbarmen and Radevormwald killed 45 people, including 40 students aged 15 and 16 and five adults. At least 24 others were seriously injured. The crash followed a disputed signal from a station master. Rescue and hospital efforts continued through the night. Federal official Georg Leier visited the scene the next morning.
