Ex NYC officer stops hijacker on Nassau flight

An ex New York City policeman claimed explosives but was overpowered by pilot John O Neill as he reached two bags near a waiting car. James Bennett 39 of Merrick NY led 132 passengers on a Nassau bound EAL 727 from Miami. U S Customs and Nassau police subdued him and found no explosives. He was jailed in Nassau as officials sort jurisdiction with the State Department.

Civil Air Patrol Frederick Squadron continues search for a missing twin engine Cessna 310 with four aboard. The plane, en route to Rapid City, South Dakota, departed Lee Airport Annapolis around 6 a.m. Thursday and has had no contact. Statewide alert issued. 11 aircraft searched Friday and 15 sorties flown.

Machete Found In Home Of Suspect In 21 Bodies Case

Investigators found a wooden club with possible bloodstains and a machete at the home of Juan V. Corona, the farm labor contractor accused in the murder of 21 itinerant workers. Sheriff Roy D. Whiteaker called the killer a homicidal maniac as more graves were uncovered along the Feather River. Corona, 37, had a prior mental health history and was to be arraigned Wednesday on murder charges.

Mandel Signs Paddling Bill In Maryland Schools

Governor Mandel signed the final 1971 session bills including a paddling measure allowing corporal punishment in 16 Maryland counties public schools. He previously vetoed 41 bills and explained this one was requested by school leaders in all counties. He also vetoed a racing-date transfer bill and a lieutenant governor seat on the capital city commission, later naming Lt. Gov. Blair Lee to fill a vacancy.

Fugitive Surrenders To Police

James Roland Nevens 40 of Baltimore, wanted since an attempted burglary and shootout with police, surrendered to a Secret Service man in Baltimore County and was taken to Westminster to face burglary charges with a $5000 bond. He fled after an exchange of fire with troopers. accomplice Robert Wilson is in satisfactory condition at Baltimore City Hospital.
