Aged Man Is Soon Freed In Maryland Trial
Salisbury May 27 Charles W Littleton 79 year old retired farmer was acquitted today of murdering his wife Mary Dennis Littleton 69. The all male jury deliberated 55 minutes after a two day trial. The State contended he hacked her skull with a chopping axe and a stick of wood. Littleton testified I never struck that woman in my life I thought too much of her. He claimed he was shelling corn when he heard her scream and found her on her knees then dead at the bottom of the steps. Prosecution relied on circumstantial evidence and witnesses with conflicting statements. The case drew jurors wary of circumstantial proof amid intense public discussion.
