Senate Staves Off One Billion Foreign Aid Cut

In Washington on May 27 Democratic leaders blocked a one billion dollar cut to the foreign aid bill, then moved to oppose another amendment seeking a half billion in reductions. Len Walker and 10 Republicans pushed the larger cut, but the Senate defeated it 35 to 27. Carlson and Eisenhower notes frame the debate amid Western alliance concerns. The House had set 6.1626 billion for next year, down from Truman’s 7.9 billion request. Psychological and Allied defense implications dominate party lines as the debate continues.
