Jail Threatened in Contempt Case in Baltimore
In Baltimore on May 26 Judge Eugene O Dunne promised substantial jail sentences next Tuesday in contempt of court proceedings against three editors and two photographers from the Baltimore American and Baltimore News. The cases stem from courtroom photographs taken during the Richard Reese Whittemore trial despite a bench order forbidding photos. The defendants, including Varela E Elliston and Earl C DeLand, argued no disruption occurred and some were unaware of the order until publication. The judge warned that unless they show cause, jail terms will be imposed.
