May brings record dryness with temperatures in the 90s and overnight lows near 60. Farmers await rain amid drought with alfalfa cutting advancing and corn fields hardening. April’s near record rainfall saved some crops, but forecasts offer little rain and a brief cool spell before a warmer return.
Two Frederick County Health Department employees Miss Ruthelle Bussard and Mrs Annabelle Troxell will be honored at the Maryland Health Department awards banquet for long meritorious service. Other honorees include Miss Florence L Burk Leo Vincent Cheney Mrs Leila V Flora and additional staff from nearby counties.
Methodist ministers from New Hampshire will exchange pul pits with Negro ministers from the South within a month. Bishop James K. Mathews of Boston told the New Hampshire Methodist Conference that exchanges will cover salary homes and all other phases of the ministers work. He did not name the communities involved.
A Frederick County migrant health council forms to sponsor a continuing migrant health project with an expected federal grant of 7 725 for this summer. Training meetings at the Church of the Brethren in Fairview Avenue feature Rev. Boyer and speakers on migrant ministry and health work along the eastern seaboard.
Frederick County Roads Department will apply liquid calcium chloride to several dirt roads this summer to reduce dust and stabilize surfaces. County Engineer Southey T. Nottingham Jr. said frequent applications may be needed yearly. The work follows a Peters road improvement request near Urbana serving seven families.
A ground breaking for the Rockville campus of Montgomery Junior College will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. with dignitaries from education and government. Dean Deyo will MC, with speakers including Dr. Reese, Rockville Mayor Ecker, Dr. Whittier, and Mr. Coyle. The MJC Chorus will debut the Alma Mater. Ground breaking will be by trustees and MJC leaders including Schick Stevens and Steely. Two building groups will start, seven total buildings aimed for September 1965 occupancy on an 88 acre site north of Rockville along Route 355.
Paris police hold three men described as little gangsters in the kidnapping of Mrs Marcel Dassault wife of a wealthy warplane builder. She says she was not mistreated during 35 hours as a prisoner and aided by the captors with cover and meals until she was freed by two gendarmes at an abandoned farm. A fourth man is being sought.
Mrs. Mazie P. Emmert will resign as Frederick Kindergarten principal this Friday at 9 45 a.m. The kindergarten will be supervised by new principal Mrs. Raymond Gregoire and assistant Mrs. Ronald Nunemaker. Registration for next year is June 1 at 9 a.m. for 60 five year olds and a waiting list of up to 20.
Representatives of the retail clerks union and seven grocery chains meet with William E Simkin of the U S Mediation and Conciliation Service to discuss a labor dispute that has closed 225 stores across Central Maryland and the Eastern Shore since April 17. Local 692 struck 57 Acme stores and six other chains closed voluntarily, while about 700 union members from Baltimore picketed 14 Safeway stores in the Washington area, a move that failed as stores stayed open.
A crowd in Lima triggered a fatal stampede after a dispute over a decision affecting a Peru game. Officials report at least 285 killed and more than 500 injured as chaos spread through the venue.
A stampede of 45,000 in Lima after tear gas forced a panicked rush to exits, killing hundreds and injuring many as fans protested a referee decision in a rugby match between Argentina and Peru. Officials reported counts from 260 to 315 dead as chaos spread.
The Supreme Court directs Prince Edward County Virginia to reopen public schools on a desegregated basis by next September. Justice Black delivers the opinion, with Justices Clark and Marlan concurring in part and noting disagreement on federal court power to order reopening. The ruling aims to guarantee equal education and may involve new parties or additional filings if needed.
Surrounded neutralist troops sought to break out after being routed from Muong Kheung on the Plaine des Jarres. About 1,500 neutralists and 23 tanks were driven from their stronghold, cut off by a larger Communist force retreating toward Muong Soui. Muong Kheung fell in a two-front assault. Muong Soui lies on the main east west highway near Ban Na where Gen. Kong Le withdrew. Souvanna Phouma demanded a ceasefire and withdrawal of Communist forces before any new 14 nation conference.
Supreme Court directed the US District Court in Atlanta to reexamine the citys latest plan for racial desegregation of its public schools after Negroes counsels argued the Grade A Year desegregation plan was invalid.
Memorial Day ceremonies mark the dedication of Camp Woodbrook near Mt. Airy for a $2500 swimming pool boosting total camp improvements to $100,000. Rev David I Markey will deliver the dedication address with remarks by Rev Wilmer Crummett and Rev Ralph White.
In New York trading this afternoon Chrysler stock showed strength as the market edged higher. Dealers noted steady turnover with broader indices also inching up.
