U S Missions Denied Control of Iran Armed Forces
Washington May 24 The United States denied Moscow's charge that American military missions control Iran's armed forces and accused the Soviet Union of meddling in Iran's internal affairs. State Department spokesman Michael J. McDermott said the 1921 treaty provisions are outdated and that US missions provide advisory and training help only, with no control or interference in Iran. The United States has run three advisory missions in Iran for about a decade under the Mutual Defense Assistance and later Mutual Security Programs.
