The Shoe-bill Heron of Africa Unearthed in Archives
The piece describes the shoe-bill’s fierce look with a large bill and yellow eyes. It notes its semi‑mular group behavior in dense swamps and diet of small fish and snakes. Classified as intermediate between storks and herons after debates, it remained rare since its 1851 discovery by Mansfield Parkyns and John Gould, with specimens later from the Roosevelt expedition.
