Lung Cancer Tied to Copper Smelter in Montana Counties
A Helena AP report ties higher lung cancer death rates in Deer Lodge and neighboring counties to sulfur dioxide emissions from the Anaconda copper smelter. Between 1967 and 1971 the two counties averaged 4.87 deaths per 100000, versus 2.3 in larger counties, with 166 actual deaths vs 107 expected between 1968 and 1972.
