An 11th grade student who streaked through TJ Hallways faced suspension which was dropped after his mother withdrew him from the school. Officials warned of firm action if protests continued and discussed student demands including dress limits and lunch options.
Bright weekend forecast as thousands prepare for a three day Memorial Day holiday. Offices banks and many stores close Monday with state and employment offices observing seen closures. Decoration Day services Sunday in Mount Olivet Cemetery feature Mayor Howald N Young and Francis Scott Key IV as speakers. Confederate services follow Monday at Lee's Monument. About 300 graves are decorated for the day with flowers and flags. A Demolition Derby by the Francis Scott Key Lions is among weekend events.
Jefferson Frederick County police investigated a drunken man who claimed he had been shot at Ingram is 66 service center. Officers found no shooting and recorded no charges. The man, aged about 20s, wandered from the Jefferson Motel after an argument with Enos Cames. He allegedly threw rocks at the motel and was frightened by a neon sign being damaged. A motel employee fired a shot to scare him away. No arrest was made and the man’s name was not recorded. In a separate incident Pennington of North Bentz Street was injured when a bicycle crash led to transport to Ick Memorial.
State official Vladimir A. Wahbe informs County Commissioner Lawrence A. Dorsey that a regional planning office will open in Frederick County. Funds are approved, space is donated by Frederick City, and the bureau will aid local planners and counties with technical assistance while reviewing Mount Airy public service issues.
Donald C Barnes announces candidacy for Sheriff of Frederick County stating his law enforcement experience and willingness to work with other agencies. He notes a leave of absence from the State Fire Marshal's Office to devote full time to the campaign at no taxpayer expense.
A squadron of six pre World War II bi planes gathered at Frederick Municipal Airport before heading 450 miles to the Weaver Aircraft Company WACO fly-in in Hamilton. Pilots from Maryland Pennsylvania and Virginia shared tales of restoring planes and flying them in the event. Frank Fox of Rockville described his 1931 WACO plane as a rare find with an estimated value of about 20000.
