Rail Labor Dispute Ends With White House Plan Acceptance
In Wamington on May 21, three major railroad unions reluctantly approved a White House proposal ending a 21 month government seizure. The deal provides immediate wage boosts up to 37 cents an hour and back pay totaling 900 to 1,100 dollars for eligible workers. Back wages cost the lines about 100 million dollars. Union leaders said approval came with some disappointment but no alternative, with the railroads to return to private ownership pending October 1066, after Army control since 1950.
