Poolesville hearing grills proposed property tax hike
More than 200 residents packed a Poolesville meeting as critics urged a smaller tax rise from 63 to 85 cents per $100 of assessed value. Citizens argued a $153,000 revenue shortfall stemmed from trash pickup but a $600,000 reserve suffices. They fault poor communication and decry taxpayer burden while urging town leaders to avoid an “us vs them” climate as a June budget vote looms.

School board votes to reopen teacher contracts in Montgomery County
The Montgomery County Board of Education unanimously agreed to renegotiate contracts with teachers and supporting services staff after the County Council redirected 42.7 million from the operating request and prohibited cost of living increases this year. Budget chief Larry A. Bowers said raises require layoffs. 800 teacher positions and 475 support roles could be cut to fund the increases. If renegotiations aren’t finished by June, the board will decide which conditions can operate without a contract.
