Senators seek energy tax removal from deficit plan
A bipartisan group of senators led by John Danforth and David Boren proposes scrapping the energy tax in President Clinton's deficit reduction bill. They would replace it with deeper spending cuts, shifting the plan toward a spending-driven deficit reduction strategy as House votes approach. The move faces strong GOP opposition and could alter the bill’s balance between taxes and cuts.

Bartlett Hattery take different roads on campaign workers taxes
Roscoe Bartlett avoided paying thousands in fed eral and state payroll taxes for campaign staff in last year’s race. State records show workers’ compensation insurance for the Republican campaign lapsed over a month before he accused opponent Tom Hattery of not covering workers at Lomond Publishing. Federal Election Commission records show Bartlett employed more than 15 people at varying times and a payroll over 82000 dollars. The Hattery committee had three paid workers with a payroll about 4300 dollars, paying over 650 dollars in payroll taxes, while Bartlett paid nothing by classifying workers as independent contractors. Bartlett said subcontractor classification followed GOP practice and allowed flexible hours. (Continued on Page A-3).
