The DAV announces its 1951 convention will be in Baltimore with about 150 delegates and 200 attending the banquet. National figuresand Maryland VA officials address hospital programs and veterans' employment. DAV and Auxiliary sessions include awards, memorial services, and leadership elections Sunday.
Winnipeg, May 20. The Red River dropped a half inch today as bright sun eased hopes that the 1950 flood might recede. A mild cheer came from the weatherman erasing rain from the forecast, but officials warn dikes remain weak and danger to the grain hub persists.
The weather forecast calls for well below normal temperatures through the weekend with a high near 65 today and a chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms this afternoon and Sunday. Temperatures should edge up Monday. Wheat in the county remains good, though the cool wet spell may delay maturit y slightly. Overnight low around 48 with light showers overnight and straw hat season starting late.
A contract for the Six Bridge road improvement connecting with a state highway in Carroll County was awarded to Richard F. Kline, the lowest bidder, by the State Roads Commission. Authorized expenditure is 513,215. Work begins about 300 feet north of the Keymar Appolds road and extends 424 of a mile to the Frederick County line with grading drainage and surfacing. A crusher run base course and penetration macadam are specified.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad announced the Cincinnatian streamliner will be removed from the Baltimore Cincinnati run after June 3 and reassigned to the Cincinnati Detroit line.
Floyd Mentzer of near Burkittsville was cleared of manslaughter in the Locust Valley road crash that killed Willam Alfred Kidwell, 18, of near Burkittsville. Mentzer was fined $50 on two counts of operating without tags and reckless driving, with the manslaughter charge dropped after testimony. The May 6 collision left Kidwell with a fractured skull and the car demolished. the victim died May 12 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Oregon Senator Wayne Morse won renomination by a decisive margin over Dave Hoover in the Republican primary. Morse led 64,270 to 37,417 with 1,321 of 2,017 precincts reporting, while Hoover carried only two central Oregon counties.
Jap Princess Taka, daughter of Emperor Hirohito, married Toshimichi Takatsuka, a museum attendant earning $20 a month. The ceremony at Prince Takamatsu's home was private with about 30 nobles present. Thousands lined the route from the imperial palace to the wedding, and the bridegroom’s father Nobukue Takatsuka is chief priest at Meiji Shrine.

Deputy Sheriff R Paul Ruhr reported his police cruiser was damaged in an early morning collision at Record and Council streets while parked east of the Court House. The other car, driven by a New Jersey resident, suffered rear and bumper damage after being “crowded” by a motorist. Damages were settled at the scene. The incident marked the second such accident at the same space, with Judge Patrick M Sehnautfer’s car previously victimized there.
Washington May 20 Leon de Rousseaux a 28 year old German acrobat lost balance attempting a 30 foot leap before 10000 spectators at Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey. He was knocked unconscious in his fall from a tower but escaped serious injury witnesses said he missed two rings and rasped while performing a backward somersault landing on a thick mattress treated at the scene and probably will be on hand for today’s show
Hood College juniors and seniors will smoke the peace pipe on May 22 to end inter-class competition, with freshmen and sophomores joining in the May hunt for underclassmen. Miss Joanne Jarrett directs senior participation and Miss Mary Burchard leads junior entertainment for the ceremonies at a secret location after blindfolded arrivals.
