Senate defeats GOP effort to cut agriculture bill

Washington May 19 The Senate rejected Republican moves to trim $36,000,000 from a $1.465 billion Agriculture Department appropriation in a 50 to 32 vote after an initial 52 to 32 defeat of suspending rules to permit the cut. The chamber then approved the full sum by voice vote. Senators Tydings and O Conor of Navyland were among 52 voting to defeat. The economy bloc claimed savings from reduced payrolls and urged cutting functions and agencies, while Byrd noted potential cuts to federal payroll and urged restraint on new programs. The House had earlier approved the larger Senate amount.
