Whittemore Admits Guard Slaying In Self Defense
Baltimore May 20 Richard Reese Whittemore an underworld figure told Criminal Court jurors he killed guard J Holtman with an iron pipe in February 1925 to defend his life. He said Holtman threatened him as he escaped from Maryland penitentiary after a botched plan with Dietz and the Kramers. Dietz testified to an escape plot and Whittemore denied attempting to flee claiming Holtman disliked him and that the fatal blow occurred during a struggle for the guard’s gun.
