An earthquake near the Colombian coast was recorded today by UC seismologists in Berkeley. The seismograph fixed the location about 3,600 miles southeast of Berkeley and at a depth of 100 to 200 miles below the earths surface.
Dr. Ralph C. Staiger as executive secretary treasurer of the International Reading Association presided over the organization’s first banquet. The body, an association for teachers professors and specialists, gathered to honor members and discuss educational goals.
Washington AP reports a new push in Congress for another rise in Social Security benefits set to take effect next year. Despite a 15 percent boost in 1970 and a further 10 percent this year, proponents argue benefits still lag behind rising living costs. The Supreme Court refused to grant Teamsters Union president James R. Hoffa another hearing on his appeal from a 1964 jury tampering conviction. The vote was 5 to 1 with Chief Justice Burger and four others in the majority. Justice Douglas dissented. Hoffa, who began serving an eight year prison term in 1967, later received a five year rail fraud sentence.
