Canine Licensing Efforts Face Heavy Losses Countywide

The Board of County Commissioners reports heavy losses from wild dog packs with 180 unlicensed or owner-refused dogs captured since last September. Deputy Murray Smith has been working dog watch, detaining and destroying unlicensed canines. Only 5,962 dog licenses have been issued this fiscal year, far below the 7,546 tags sold for the year ending June 30, 1948.

Student To Face Charges In Two Counties After Hit and Run

James Baldwin Doten Jr., 18, of Takoma Park Maryland, a student, faces charges in two counties following a hit and run on alternate Route 40 around 1 20 Sunday morning. State Trooper Clyde Tucker stopped Doten near Hagerstown after Bruce Fording Baisch reported a car sideswiping his vehicle and driving off. The accident occurred six miles west of the city with both cars damaged. Doten was released on bond in Hagerstown on a charge of drunken driving and summoned to Police Court to answer a failure to stop after an accident charge. Joseph Marsella of Cleveland was said to be rolling down South Mountain on Route 40 about 1 30.

Negro Pvt Dennis condemned to death for Guam rape slaying

A 20th Air Force court martial on Guam condemned Negro Pvt Herman P. Dennis Jr. to death for the rape slaying of Ruth Farnsworth. After a one hour and 26 minute deliberation the eight man panel indicated a conviction and prepared the sentence. Tears appeared as Dennis listened with a chaplain, while the defense asked to withhold the sentence to avoid influencing two other co defendants.

Hi-Way drive-in theater managers arrested

The Hi-Way drive-in theater manager T. W. North Jr and two employees Clinton Karn and Jack McKee were arrested in Boonsboro for violating the county blue law by opening on a Sunday. They posted $7.45 collateral each and face a June 8 hearing. The theater near Hagerstown had advertised a Sunday showing after hinting at defiance of the ban.

Tractor trailer speedster seized after 90 mph chase

State Police Sgt. Corbin pursued a tractor-trailer at about 90 miles an hour. The driver Marsella was arrested on a charge of exceeding 70 mph. Cargo listed as 22 000 pounds, vehicle and load totaling around 45000 pounds. Dorcas Sisters Class meets at Doubs Methodist church May 13 with prayer, song, Scripture reading. Door prize won by Mary Jane Davis.

Meeting Minutes From Braddock Heights Class Picnic

The box was awarded to Mr. Michan. Eight members and two visitors attended. Delicious refreshments were provided by the hostess. The closing song, H Keeps Me Singing, was sung. The meeting adjourned until next month when the class will hold its picnic at Braddock Heights.
